FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Students who have registered in an English-medium department will first take the English Placement Examination (YDSTS). Students who take 40/100 and over from this exam will take the English Proficiency Exam. In this exam, students who get enough points according to their department they are enrolled start their undergraduate education. Students who do not get enough points will attend the English Preparatory Class during the academic year.

YES. You can study in the English Preparatory Class in case you hand in a petition to the Student Affairs Department.
YES. You should ABSOLUTELY take this test, because the English Placement Exam (YDSTS) is intended to determine your level of English language skills.
YES. If you have difficulties after you have been placed at the appropriate level depending on the result of the YDSTS, you may be able to make a level and/or class change only once provided that your Instructors have detected and reported your situation.
YES. You can request a Certificate of English Language Proficiency from the Student Affairs Office after the completion of your English Preparatory Class.
Your English Proficiency Exam Result is valid for 2 years.
The Foreign Language Department is accredited by 'Pearson Assured' and the quality of our education has been documented at international level. Additionally, our students have the right to obtain the 'Pearson Assured' certificate, which is an internationally recognized degree of English language proficiency.
You can follow all announcements related to English Preparatory Class and General Departments from the Foreign Language Department website (https://ydb.iku.edu.tr/) and the CATS system (http://cats.iku.edu.tr/portal).
Your counselor will direct you to the authorities in charge when you primarily share the academic problems you are experiencing with your class counselor.
YES. Students of Department of Foreign Languages English Preparatory Class are required to attend classes during the Academic Year.
YES. You will be exempted from the English Preparatory Class if you present the document indicating the score you have received from one of the following exams to the Student Affairs Office.

YES. Students who meet the required conditions may be exempted from the English Preparatory Class in one semester.
Students who fail in the English Preparatory Class may attend the optional English Preparatory Class during Summer School and can successfully complete their Preparatory Class if they meet the academic requirements. In addition, every student who fails in the first year of English Preparatory Class has the right to take the English Proficiency Exam which will be held at the beginning of the next academic year. If they succeed in the exam, they can continue with their departments. Failed students repeat the English Preparatory Class.
The course materials can be purchased at the stands set up within the campus at the beginning of the academic year.
